ULEZ Alert reminds you to pay road charges and tolls on time and warns you before Scottish low emission zones. It is built so that almost nothing about you leaves your phone.
Your location stays on your phone
If you allow location, the app uses it on your phone to tell when you enter a zone or cross a toll. It does this in the background too, even when the app is closed or not in use, because that's when you're driving with another app on screen. Your location, routes and history are never sent to us or anyone else; the map only loads the area it shows, as explained below. No record of your trips is kept on any server.
The map
Home shows the zones and tolls near you on a map: Apple Maps on iPhone, and OpenFreeMap (OpenStreetMap data) on Android. Like any map, it loads the area on screen from Apple or OpenFreeMap. Zone and toll alerts carry a small map of the spot, drawn on your phone when the alert comes; it loads that area from Apple or OpenFreeMap in the same way. Nothing about the map or your position comes to us.
Checking a place
When you type or share where you're going, a place name or address is looked up by your phone's own maps service (Apple's on iPhone, Google's on Android), the same as searching in their maps app. If you share a Google Maps or Apple Maps short link, the app opens that link once with Google or Apple to read where the place is. The check itself is done on your phone. Nothing about it is sent to us, and your own location is never sent.
Your number plate
If you tap "Look up this reg", the plate is sent over an encrypted connection to our lookup service, which asks the DVSA's MOT History service for the car's fuel type, first registration date and MOT expiry date, and passes the answer back. From a month before the MOT runs out, the app asks again in the same way, at most once a day when you open it, so it never reminds you about an MOT you've already had. The plate is not stored or logged. If you type your car's details yourself instead, nothing is sent.
Zone and price updates
The app downloads an updated list of zones, prices and deadlines from our server. That download contains nothing about you. Like any website, the server sees your phone's internet address; we don't store it. To stop abuse, the lookup service keeps recent addresses in memory for about a minute and never writes them to disk.
The launch email list
If you give us your email on this website to hear when the app is out, we keep only that address and the date you joined. We use it to send that one email, then delete the list. It's never shared or used for anything else. To be taken off sooner, email help@gqmarketing.co.uk.
Subscriptions
Subscriptions are handled by Apple on iPhone and by Google Play on Android. We never see your name, card or store account; the app only learns whether a subscription is active.
Diagnostics
The app keeps a log of its alerts on your phone so you can check it is working. It only leaves your phone if you choose Share diagnostics log and send it to someone.
What we don't do
No adverts, no analytics, no tracking, no crash reporting services, no selling or sharing of data. No account is needed.
Your rights
The app holds no personal data about you, so there is nothing for us to give you, change or delete; deleting the app removes everything it stored on your phone. If you joined the launch email list, email us and we'll tell you what we hold or delete it.
Who we are
